YouTube Short blocked by a copyright claim: why, and how to unblock it

Facts checked on October 22, 2026.

The answer: past one minute, one active claim is enough

A Short that runs past one minute and carries an active copyright claim is blocked in every country: it no longer plays, is no longer recommended and earns nothing. The policy the owner picked makes no difference: beyond one minute, the block applies whatever that policy is.

The threshold comes from the longer format. A vertical or square video up to 3 minutes long, uploaded since October 15, 2024, counts as a Short; older uploads stay long-form videos. Between one and three minutes, a claimed Short stops cold. Under one minute, YouTube changes nothing in its rules.

Every claim counts, including one filed by hand. YouTube sends you a notification when one of your Shorts gets blocked.

This guide describes what YouTube enforces, from its help pages as read on October 22, 2026; it is not legal advice.

Where the claim comes from, and what the owner decides

Content ID compares every uploaded video with the works their owners have registered. A match with a video, or with one segment of it, can create a claim with no person involved.

The owner has three responses: block the video, monetize it for themselves, or track its viewers. Each can apply to some countries only. On a long-form video, that choice decides who sees it. On a Short past the minute, it no longer decides visibility: an owner who only tracks viewers still leaves the Short blocked everywhere for as long as the claim stays active.

Find the claim in YouTube Studio

The labels below are the ones in YouTube's English help.

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Content in the left menu, then the Shorts tab.
  2. Click the filter bar, then Claims.
  3. In the Restrictions column, hover over Claims, then click See details.
  4. Under Content used, See details shows the claimant.

Write down the claimant before you pick a route: what follows depends on it.

Lifting the block: what YouTube's help allows

The block lasts as long as the claim is active. Once the claim is resolved, the Short plays again and can earn again. The help describes three routes: remove the claimed content, dispute, or leave the claim. A fourth idea, cutting the Short down, is not in it: it gets its own paragraph below.

Remove the claimed content. From the claim, three tools are offered: Trim out segment, Erase song, or Replace song with a track from YouTube's Audio Library. The claim goes away once all the claimed content is trimmed or muted; if any of it remains, so does the claim. A saved edit cannot be reverted. Outside the Partner Program, YouTube may refuse to save changes on a video above 100,000 views.

Cut the Short below one minute. The YouTube Studio editor removes the beginning, middle or end of a video shorter than six hours, from a computer; its help page says nothing about Shorts. No page says a claimed Short cut below one minute leaves the block: YouTube does not publish a rule on this, checked on October 22, 2026. Do not count on it.

Dispute, with valid grounds. Three grounds are accepted: you hold all the necessary rights, your use falls under a copyright exception such as fair use, or the video was misidentified. Giving credit, owning a copy of the song or choosing not to monetize are not grounds. Abusing disputes can bring penalties against the video or the channel. The claimant has 30 days: they release the claim, reinstate it, request the video's removal, or let the deadline pass and the claim expires.

Leave the claim. If it is valid, the help suggests leaving it as is. For a Short past one minute, that means accepting it stays blocked.

What happens to your channel

Nothing, as long as it is a claim. YouTube writes that a blocked Short carries no penalty for the channel. A claim affects the video, usually not the channel or the account, and a Content ID claim typically does not lead to a strike.

A strike follows a valid copyright removal request, and the video is then taken down. It expires after 90 days if you complete Copyright School and the channel has fewer than 3. At 3 strikes, the account and its channels are subject to termination. A dispute without grounds can lead there: the claimant may answer it with a removal request.

What Stratos·Clip does about this rule

Stratos·Clip cuts your long videos into Shorts and posts them straight to your YouTube channel. It applies the one-minute rule before rendering, not after upload. By default, every source is treated as carrying claimable audio, and every clip is capped at 58 seconds: the end is trimmed, the opening kept.

Why 58 and not 60? Snapping to sentence boundaries and rounding the file can add a fraction of a second after the cut, and YouTube blocks as soon as the minute is passed. The cap comes first: by default, it applies to every source you launch, and a high-scoring moment does not escape it. It often matters: for educational or documentary content, the target length runs up to 70 seconds. On a series channel, the audio is always treated as claimable, and no setting works around Content ID.

The cap prevents the worldwide block. It does not prevent the claim: on a 58-second Short, the owner keeps all three responses. You stay responsible for the videos you connect: your channel is the one that publishes, and a claim lands on its videos. Before it goes out, every clip can be watched, pulled from the queue or moved to another time. The interface is in French, and detection and titles have only been measured on videos in French. To try it on a video you hold the rights to, the free plan gives 30 credits a month and one channel, with a watermark.

Someone else's video on screen raises other questions: the reaction clips page covers them. The gaming and series and fiction templates follow the same cap. The Shorts length guide covers how long a Short can run, and the reused content guide what YouTube agrees to monetize.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my YouTube Short blocked worldwide?

Because it runs past one minute and carries an active copyright claim. For a Short of that length, YouTube blocks it everywhere as soon as any claim is active, manual claims included, whatever policy the owner chose.

Does a blocked Short hurt my channel?

No. YouTube states there are no penalties to your channel, and a claim affects the video, usually not the channel. A strike only comes from a valid copyright removal request.

How do I unblock a claimed Short?

Get the claim resolved: remove all the claimed content in YouTube Studio, or dispute it if you have valid grounds. The claimant then has 30 days to respond. Once the claim is resolved, the Short plays again.

Will trimming my Short under one minute unblock it?

YouTube does not publish a rule on this, checked on October 22, 2026. Its help pages name one way out of the block: the claim being resolved.

Can a Short under one minute get a copyright claim?

Yes. Only the automatic worldwide block is reserved for Shorts over one minute: under the minute, YouTube changes nothing, and the owner keeps all three responses, to block, monetize or track the video.

Why does Stratos·Clip stop its clips at 58 seconds?

So that a claimed clip never crosses the minute. Two seconds of margin cover segment snapping and file rounding; the cap applies by default, before rendering.
